In one of the most popular islands of the world, Bali, there is a small eco-friendly paradise that you’ll love even if you’re on a low budget! Serenity Eco Guesthouse is located in Canggu, only 5 minutes walking from the beach. This resort is one of the most beautiful places we’ve stayed in Bali, they totally amazed us by their sustainable initiatives and affordable prices. So let’s talk about this sustainable and eco-conscious hotel in Bali, the Serenity Eco Guesthouse and Yoga.
The history of Serenity
Serenity Eco Guest House is a family business located in Canggu, on the island of Bali, Indonesia. With almost 20 years of existence, Serenity have been the pioneer in the popular sustainable growth that is (for good) taking over the world! 🙂
The founders, the Chieppa family, have been expanding the guesthouse into an all in one eco-friendly budget yoga resort, where everyone can reach the balance of body and mind.
If you search for them in Tripadvisor, you can find all the good ratings! And they were also mentioned in international news outlets like The Guardian and Lonely Planet. They are also the most booked yoga package in Indonesia.Yoga, eating healthy, permaculture and eco-friendly accommodation are the four pillars of this resort.
You can also enjoy an amazingly prepared meal in Alkaline, the fully vegan and vegetarian restaurant that shares location with the guest house. They offer raw vegan and vegetarian food, smoothie bowls, and the kitchen is supplied by the on-site organic garden.

The eco facilities
The resort is the best example for a sustainable facility. The team works together to reduce the impact to the minimum, and create a system that allows the workers and guests to learn and implement sustainable techniques and practices.
We got a very detailed tour through the whole resort, where the team explained us about every of the eco features that give the “Eco” into the Serenity Eco Guesthouse. Some of them are:
Permaculture is an integral designed system based on multiple sciences that works to satisfy the humanity necessities without destroying polluting or drain the natural resources. The resort base all their practices under this system. For example, all the fruits and vegetables that grow and are being sold in the resort are seasonal, which means that the plants just grow when their natural cycle allows them to grow. After that, all the bio waste coming from the harvest and preparation of those fruits and vegetables is used during the next plantation.
They are developing their grey water system and they are also working in a natural bio gas plant. The resort is a place of developing green projects and creative eco-friendly ideas. Here are the stations of the permaculture:
- The living medical garden
- Alkaline restaurant
- Healthy water and clean planet hallway
- From grey water to flourishing garden
- Worm farm
- Tree nursery
- Composting area

All the bio trash generated by the resort is collected and deposited in boxes far from the resort. There the bio trash passes through the process of decomposition for some days, until it becomes fully nutritious compost that will be then used for helping the plants of the resort to get the nutrients for a better growing.
There is also a small compost in the garden, to illustrate the process behind the resort. The worms can eat half their body weight in food each day, they reproduce very fast, and worm castings are an organic form of fertilizers. The waste of worms creates an organic soil enricher.
Grey water waste system
Recently installed in the facilities, this system catches the gray water coming from some of the rooms and stores it into a special deposit. After some filtration processes, this water can be used to water the plants of the resort.
Even if the kitchen washes their cutlery with normal soap (due to the hygiene regulations of the country) the guests have the option to clean their own cutlery, glasses and hands with soapnut. The soapnut is generated by a little fruit and it has exactly the same effect as regular soap, but without the chemicals.
Indonesia doesn’t have a great sorting trash system, but the resort has developed a system that allows them to separate all the trash and locate it in the proper recycling facilities. You will find special bins all around the resort to put your trash inside, from plastic to organic. The collected plastic and glass will be later taken by a company that engages with proper waste management.
Sustainable construction materials
Serenity Eco Guest House was originally a family house, but of course they wanted to make it grow. During the remodeling, the family turned to use sustainable materials like bamboo to create some of the coziest rooms in whole Canggu.
Natural insecticides and pesticides
You need to know that during our stay, we didn’t face any problem with mosquitos or something similar. Not because the place had one of this pesticide systems, or at least, not a traditional (and harmful) one. The whole resort is surrounded by natural repellent plants like the famous Lemon Grass plant. This one and other ones generate odors that are unbearable for mosquitoes and other flying insects.
We arrived directly from Denpasar airport. There are some options to arrive to Canggu from Denpasar, but we definitely recommend you to use one of the transport apps available in Bali: Grab or Gojek.
Both of them have great prices and the drivers usually speak very good English, so you will be able to communicate with them without problem. You also pay a fixed price so the risk of being scam reduce drastically.
Here you can see a map that shows the route from Denpasar airport to the Serenity Eco Guesthouse and Yoga
Travel tip: The prices of the apps changed a lot depending where you take it. We recommend you walk a little bit outside of the airport and then order the vehicle. It will save you a lot of money!
When we finally arrived at the resort, we were welcomed with delicious tea by a very gentle and nice crew! Don’t hesitate to ask them something, they will be always very nice and will help you with everything!
The Love Room of the Serenity
After making the tour through the whole Serenity Eco Guesthouse and learning about their important work, they took us to our room.
You need to know that every room in the resort is different! And of course, every room has a different name and it is very special on its own.
We were very lucky, because we got one of the newest (and most eco and sustainable design) rooms available! The Love room <3
The place was great! A beautifully bamboo based room with all the commodities that someone would wish! The first thing that we saw when we entered was the lovely double bed with the towels accommodated as two lovely swans with flowers!
We had a little desk and a closet and of course, a mosquito net to avoid every pinch in the night. Our bathroom had a beautiful sight to the jungle and a nice shower with a lovely design.
The room had also some sustainable anti mosquito lotion in the room, so in case that you would like to walk around in the night or simply chill in the nice open lounge outside the room, you would not be bothered by the mosquitoes 😉
Also, this room had no AC, that is unnecessary because the room is designed to let the fresh air pass through the room and give you a fresh night.
The room was great indeed, but the fact that the pool was just some steps away was the best! The pool of the Serenity Eco Guesthouse is open from 8:00 to 21:00 so we had the chance to use it almost the whole day! It has a little section that is not so deep, so if you travel with babies they can for sure have a great time there also!
Alkaline, a great option for raw, vegan and vegetarian fans
There are plenty of options for eating around Canggu, but we just had the best of all of them, some meters away from our room! The Alkaline restaurant shares location with the resort, and it is the place where we tried some of the best vegan meals ever!
You can find a great variety of food, drinks and desserts that will make your day better! Not just filling you up with the necessary energy for the day, but also a great joy!
The restaurant follow the same sustainable philosophy of the resort. Some ingredients like fruits and vegetables are coming directly from the garden of the resort, and even some of the cutlery too! If you ask for a whole coconut, the straw will be the stem of one of the papaya plants! How cool is that?

Activities in the resort
Canggu is a lovely place, you can explore the little town by yourself or watch amazing sunsets from the beach, that is by the way, just some steps away from the resort.
But Serenity Eco Guesthouse also offers yoga classes, massages and cooking courses, so you won't know which activity to start with! In our case, we were invited to try the Aerial Yoga, A Raw cooking class and a full Balinese massage! 🙂
Let us tell you about them!
Aerial Yoga, our first time
Zsuzsi loves to do yoga, but she has never tried Aerial Yoga before. Dante tried yoga for the first time in the Serenity! But there is a great variety of yoga classes offered by the resort, so you can choose the level that you’re comfortable with. Yoga is a great exercise for the body and the mind. If you are a yoga lover like us, or you just want to give it a try, the resort has a LOT of classes with different variations, from normal yoga, yoga for women, power yoga, morning yoga and much more! The one that we tried was the Aerial Yoga.
It was definitely challenging! It is not like normal yoga where you just work with your body and mind, because here you need to make some of the positions with the help of a special Yoga Hammock! It may look scary to try, but the Yogis are very professional, helpful and patient, so you can be sure that they will help you with every position.
You don’t need to worry about the equipment, it will be provided by the staff of the resort, you just need to bring comfortable clothes and some water to keep you hydrated!
It was a great experience, and it really made us feel very full of energy and in a good vibe with ourselves 🙂
Raw vegan cooking class at Alkaline restaurant
We have already written about the Alkaline restaurant, but they actually offer a cooking class as well, if you want to learn how to cook some of their specialities!
In our class, we learned how to do some raw coconut and chocolate balls. Our teacher was one of the chefs of the restaurant, and he showed us step by step how to prepare the ingredients, how to mix them and form the spheres! And of course, we had the chance to eat our own creations :))
We got a traditional Balinese massage!
In our last day in the resort we got the best gift that Serenity Eco Guesthouse could ever give us: a traditional Balinese massage! After all the exercises with the Aerial Yoga, sightseeing in Canggu and working as well, we were indeed in the need of a great massage.
The masseuses were very professional, and they were very careful about how much strength they applied, asking every time if they were being enough gentle with us. We got a full body massage that let us allowed to relax as we haven't done in a long time!
They have a great variety of massages, and you can book the one that suits better or you 🙂

The importance of sustainability
We’re very happy that we chose to stay at Serenity Eco Guesthouse, we couldn’t think of a better place to stay in our first days in Bali. This eco-friendly resort is making a great effort to be more sustainable every single day, and our biggest honour and passion is to share their work and efforts! 🙂 Also, we’re happy that they don’t make eco accommodation seem to be only for the luxury travelers. Being eco-friendly and living a sustainable lifestyle shouldn’t be only for the elite and shouldn’t be luxurious. They’re a great example for a place that makes sustainability affordable, they even have shared or mixed rooms with prices starting from 9 euros/night, but the private single room is also only 16 euros/ night. Serenity is a guesthouse, a yoga retreat, a resort, a hostel and a hotel at the same time.
