When we visited Slovenia, we chose Ljubljana, the capital city as our base. Ljubljana is a perfect choice if you’re planning to take day trips. This city is especially convenient for those who don’t want or can’t rent a car and want to use Slovenian public transport. Ljubljana has good connections to all parts of Slovenia. In this guide, we write about the day trips we took from Ljubljana: Skofja Loka town, Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle, and of course the picture-postcard perfect Lake Bled!
Ljubljana was chosen as Europe’s green city in 2016. We have visited a lot of European capitals, but Ljubljana has been the cleanest one of all. Ljubljana achieved to preserve the green character of the city to the present day, as there are parks all over the place.
The old town of Ljubljana is a mix between Budapest and Vienna (have you ever been in those cities?). The architecture has an Art-Nouveau style, just like a lot of buildings in Vienna. That is not surprising if we know that the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik was actually studying in Vienna before he returned to Ljubljana to become one of the most important modern Slovenian architects. Anyway, so he was the architect of most of the buildings and bridges in the old town. So if you like the secession style of architecture, you will definitely love Ljubljana as well as Jože Plečnik’s architectural imprint on this city is huge!
Ljubljana is the center of Slovenia, so it’s a great base for your day trips!
Transportation in Slovenia
The bus station in Ljubljana is very close to the city center, and our accommodation was 5 minutes walking from it, so we took all our trips by bus.
The buses are a little bit more frequent and a little bit cheaper, than the train.
The train station is a bit more far from the city center of Ljubljana.
If you want to be flexible, this is definitely the best option.
For example, if you’re planning to visit the beach from Ljubljana than it can take up to 3 hours until you get there by bus. By car, it can be only 1 hour. Also, you can stop by car as many times as you want, to adore the views. But it’s not the most eco-friendly option.

1. LAKE BLED
Lake Bled is definitely one of the most famous places in Slovenia, and it’s not surprising! Lake Bled has the opportunity for every kind of activity, from just walking around the lake, through taking a boat trip to cycling or swimming.
It’s home to a charming Medieval castle, a picture-postcard church on the Bled island, lots of legends, hiking trails and adventures in nature for adrenalin junkies as well! Lake Bled has things to do for couples, families, kids, solo-travelers, those who seek luxury experiences, but for backpackers on a low-budget as well.
This was the first from the day trips we took from Ljubljana, and we didn’t get disappointed at all!
We wrote a very detailed guide to Lake Bled with the top 20 things to do at Lake Bled!
2. POSTOJNA CAVE AND PREDJAMA CASTLE
We included the Postojna Cave and the Predjama Castle on a day trip from Ljubljana! It’s perfectly doable on one day because they are close to each other, and both are part of the Postojna Cave Park. You can get a combined ticket to both places, and it’s possible to buy that ticket in the castle, in the cave and online as well.
Postojna Cave is the second-longest cave system in Slovenia and a very popular attraction since the year 1810! Postojna cave system is two million years old, and it was hollowed out by the Pivka River. The cave was constantly mentioned in the old books and stories around the region. The first graffiti inside the cave date back to the 13th century. In 1819 the place got the status of touristic attraction and the first tours took place.
Predjama Castle is the largest cave castle in the world, with that being part of the book of the Guinness Records as well!
The castle was shaped using the natural structure of a cave, fussing the hand made materials with the natural rock walls. It is a wonder of architecture and due to its strategic position and defense, the castle was never conquered in battle.
Three of the attractions (the cave, the Vivarium, and the Expo Cave Karst) are in the facilities of the cave, the Predjama Castle is located some kilometers from the cave.
3. SKOFJA LOKA
Skofja Loka is a little town, very close to Ljubljana. It’s easily reachable, so it makes a perfect day trip from Ljubljana. It takes only 45 minutes by bus to arrive to Skofja Loka.
Skofja Loka has a beautiful medieval style due to the old castles and the 4 bridges that cross the Selška Sora river. The town owns some beautifully preserved old, historic houses in the Old Town, and it offers hiking trails for long and short distances for those who seek adventures.
