Amsterdam is full of attractions. When you plan your trip it’s quite difficult to choose what to see, which museums to visit, how much time to spend in a place. We also had that struggle! We indeed took into consideration the days that we spend in the capital of the Netherlands. As we’re both museum lovers, we both wanted to take a cruise on the Amsterdam canals, so we decided to get the I amsterdam City Card. It was the best decision that we could take!
In this article, we’ll tell you about all the benefits we enjoyed during our visit to this city thanks to our city card.
I amsterdam City Card is an all-inclusive city pass where you get free admission to museums, attractions, and free city-wide public transport. Save time, money and stress during your visit to Amsterdam!

You can spend up to a week in Amsterdam, there’re lots of things to see! I amsterdam City Card has 5 types:
- 24 hours for 65 euros.
- 48 hours for 85 euros
- 72 hours for 105 euros
- 96 hours for 120 euros
- 120 hours for 130 euros
The cards include the same features, the only thing you should consider is the duration of your stay.
Where can I buy the I amsterdam City Card?
The I amsterdam City Card information center is the I amsterdam Visitor Center. It’s located at the International Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. In case you arrive by train or bus, you can also find an I amsterdam City Card information center at the Central station of the city.
All of the official information centers are full of kind and informative people that will answer all your questions before, during and after your stay. It’s possible to buy souvenirs, guides, maps, rain ponchos, umbrellas or rent bikes in these visitor centers.
You’re able to buy your card directly at the pickup points when you arrive in the city, however, we advise you to buy it online before. Like that, you will be able to check the attractions and you may get a discount in case there is a discount available.
How to activate and use your card
Every city card has two chips inside that can be activated separately. One of them is the public transport chip, this one is activated at the moment that you use it for the first time at any of the checkers of the trams, buses or subway stations.
The second chip is activated when you use it for the first time in any attraction including museums, cruises, restaurants or stores. The activation time of both is independent between them.
This is very cool if you want to spend the first day riding a bike. You can then activate the public transport when you will need it. The time will start to run from that moment.
What is included in the I amsterdam City Card?
The transport system that runs in the city is known as GVB and it includes buses, trams, and subways. Unlimited use of all of them is included in the I amsterdam city card including the night buses and the ferry that connect both sides of the city through the river.
Be aware that the train from and to the airport is not included in the card, so you will need to buy your ticket before arriving in the city.
A very important detail of the transport system in Amsterdam is that you always need to check in your card at the machines, and check out when getting off the bus, tram or subway. So, don’t forget to do it every time!
If you want to take a bus outside of Amsterdam to visit another location you will also need to pay an extra ticket. It will be convenient for you to take one of the free cruises included in the card 😉
