As you may know, the world is facing a huge crisis due to the presence of the COVID-19, also known as the Coronavirus. Different countries took various measurements, and most of the countries closed schools, stores, shops, services and obligated most of the people to stay at home. In order to stop the spreading of the virus, the smartest thing to do right now is staying at home, self-quarantining and social distancing. If you are a travel lover like us, we know it may be difficult to stay at home. We have put together a list of ideas and things to do at home for people with itchy feet who want to keep their travel spirit alive.
Why is it important to stay at home?
If a lot of people get sick at the same time, it can cause a breakdown of the health services. This already happened in China and Italy, so other countries around the world have implemented a quarantine to avoid human interaction and stop the spreading of the virus.
We know that this may be very frustrating for some people, but if we cooperate and follow the instructions of the governments and health institutions, we can change the course of this virus and keep our family and friends safe and healthy.
We recommend you to check only the official information of the WHO about the coronavirus. It is highly important to not spread fake news and panic. Click here to read about coronavirus on the official WHO pages.
Don’t spread fake information
Social media have revolutionized ways of getting information. Nowadays it is easy to have the information in your hands just unblocking your phone. This has also made it easier for bad or ignorant people to write lies and show them as if they were real. This is very irresponsible, and it can cause a lot of problems. So before believing and sharing any kind of post, article or video, we recommend you to take the following steps:
- Check the origin of the information. Is this person telling you some time that you can confirm at least in the other three information resources? If not, don’t lose your time giving your attention.
- Check the purpose of the information. What does the person sharing this want to achieve? Informing for good, or just creating polemic and panic around? We are sure that you can identify that easily.
- If everything is confusing, better to check the official announcements. The World Health Organization or WHO is the official institution with all the updated and real information. Every time we read any kind of crazy news about COVID-19, we always check the official website of WHO to see if it is real or not. If you want to do the same, you can click here to read the state of the COVID outbreak updated.

Make a video call with your beloved ones around the world
Maybe the hardest thing about isolation and quarantine is the fact of not being able to visit your family or friends. Luckily, we live in a time when communication is easier thanks to technology.
Make time to call your family or friends around the world by video call. Share with them your thoughts and have conversations with them as if it was a normal day. It is important to know that we won’t be in this situation forever, so be patient and keep the connection with the people who you love. You can also play online videogames with them, watch movies together or even cook together by video call, the possibilities are endless!
If you call your friends who live in another country, basically you can virtually travel! 🙂
Organize your postcards, souvenirs, and flyers
When we travel, we like to get a little souvenir from every place we visit. Normally we like to get a postcard or magnet. However, when we visit a new country, we get a little flag as well. We also like to get all the free papers, maps, and flyers that show something colorful and interesting.
We already have so many poscards, flyers and info papers, that at some point we started to put them in a box until it got totally full. If you are doing the same, you can take this time at home to organize them! Everything looks better when it is organized, so give it a try! You can even create a journal or a very colorful and interactive album with all the stuff that you get during your travels 🙂 You can print, organise your photos, flyers, postcard and info papers, and like that you get to relive the memories and experience those precious travel moments!
Practice the language that you were planning to learn for a long time
We live in a globalized world, so it is sure that you will be able to communicate in English almost everywhere. But even with that, would it not be great to speak a little bit of the language of the country that you will visit after the crisis goes away?
Learning a new language is an amazing way to train your brain. It will open a big door to meet a new culture, new things that you didn’t know you would like, and new people that could become an important part of your life. Together we can speak 6 languages (English, Spanish, German, Hungarian, Slovak, and French) that have to make our travels everywhere and have allowed us to get more in touch with the local culture of the places we visit.
So what are you waiting for? You can practice with free applications, websites, and forums around the internet. You never know when a new language will become your new passion 😉
One of the apps we really like is called DuoLingo, you can download it on your phone for free, and learn any language with fun exercises!
Create and experiment with international food recipes in the kitchen or watch virtual cooking classes
The fact that you can’t visit restaurants during the quarantine doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy delicious meals, this is your opportunity to learn new skills in the kitchen!
There are countless websites with cool recipes that you can learn and put into practice. You can check some of the Tasty recipes on their official website clicking here.
If you want to keep your traveling spark alive, why not cook some international food? Do you miss Thailand? Cook some tasty Pad Tai with peanuts! Are you missing beautiful Mexico? Tacos can be prepared with basically every ingredient 😉
Eating flavoury and variate meals will make you feel happier and also more energized. You will also have a bigger menu when everything will go back to normality. It will be good for your diet, your nutrition and also your wallet!
Read travel guides for your future travels
It is important to keep the globetrotter spirit up. So you can use this time to make the best travel plan for the future!
Sometimes, when we will travel somewhere, the school and the work consume all our time so in the end, we go to the places without knowing what we will do during our time there. So now that you have this time free for planning, use it to the maximum and research to get the best plan.
What we usually do when we will visit a new place is research about the most interesting places, read official information and also some travel guides from bloggers who have been there before. Then we prepare a map in google maps with all the landmarks that we are planning to visit. In the end, we count how much the entrance fees to museums or other places is, how much the transportation cost and if there is some kind of special card to the city or place that includes all this for a better price.
We don’t know where are planning to go after the quarantine and all this crisis will go away, but here we left some of our most popular travel guides for you:
Learn a useful travel skill like knot making, how to read maps or how to navigate with the stars
Exploring nature can be challenging sometimes, and have some skills that can be very useful in the future. If you live in a big city, it is probable that you never got the chance to learn this kind of thing, but now that you have the time, you can learn some valuable skills for the adventure, in case you are planning to make a big nature exploration. Here you can learn how to make knots for camping and survival tactics.
You could also learn how to read a normal map! We all use google maps and it is super easy, but what if you lose signal or your phone itself? Here you can learn how to read maps, maps scale, grid references and how to read a compass.
Exploring nature in the night can be incredible and magical. If you are a beginner we recommend you explore around with a certified guide of course.
